Oropharyngeal Swallowing Disorders
Problems with coordinating the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus in order to perform the function of swallowing. A swallowing disorder can be structural or motor-related. Individuals with oropharyngeal swallowing disorders may experience issues with the pharyngeal phase of swallowing meaning the pharynx has difficulty properly passing things down to the stomach. In some cases symptoms may be very obvious as they directly affect an individual’s ability to swallow however, some people may experience symptoms that are less obviously connected to swallowing.
