Spinal Cord Disease

Spinal cord disease can take place in many different forms due to the complex function and organization of the spinal cord itself. Diseases of the spinal cord can include tumors, meningitis, polio, autoimmune or inflammatory diseases, as well as degenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and spinal muscular atrophy.  Symptoms can vary depending on the disorder itself however the most common symptoms are muscle weakness, changes in reflex abilities, loss of sensation, difficulty controlling the bladder or bowel, and in some cases paralysis.
